Discover the ancient heritage craft of marbling and the joy of Japanese stitch bound bookmaking. Marbling is a surface pattern craft, used for paper and textile art and is an endangered heritage craft.

This educational and fun 3-hour ink marbling workshop is the perfect activity for adults looking to explore their creativity and learn a new skill. You will learn about the history of this ancient craft and be guided through the process of ink marbling, through demonstrations, to create mesmerising patterns on paper, using simple tools and breath-work. You will finish the class creating a simple Japanese stitch-bound handcrafted book using patterned paper.

Your tutor, Rachel O’Connell, creates wearable textile art, home décor, jewellery, stationery and marbled leather carry goods. As a sustainable maker, Rachel works with the Royal Ballet and Opera to repurpose theatrical textiles. She has over 30 years marbling experience and is a tutor at West Dean Art College. She also teaches in schools, community groups, galleries and in museums across the UK. She tutors for MAKE Southwest Arts Council National Saturday Club and the charity, The Creative Dimensions Trust, teaching students from under privileged backgrounds. She has exhibited and sold work in National Galleries and Museums and exhibited at London Craft Week, Craft Festival and has work in select galleries and independent retailers in Devon.

All materials, an apron and gloves are provided. Rachel suggests students wear older clothing, as ink can stain. www.rocworx co.uk
